FPGA Computing

FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) computing is used to achive high performance computing within tight power and space budgets. The high performance is achieved through massive paralleism.

FPGA devices

Xilinx and Altera lead the market in FPGA devices. Lattice Semiconductor has both SRAM and non-volatile, flash-based FPGAs. Actel supplies antifuse and reprogrammable flash based FPGAs, as well as offering mixed signal flash-based FPGAs. Atmel provides fine-grain reconfigurable devices with AVR Microcontrollers and FPGA fabric on the same die.

Celoxica and Nallatech are leading British companies in reconfigurable computing based on FPGA chips.

Applications for FPGA computing

Military electronics, high performance scientific computing and embedded systems are the most common current applications for FPGA computing.

Particularly strong progress has been made in image recognitioon and image processing with massive acceleration achieved in comparison with conventional computing.
